Independence Day With Fireworks in New York City

July 4th in New York City

If you’re headed to the Big Apple for Independence Day weekend, you won’t want to miss Macy’s annual fireworks on the East River, not to mention all the other noteworthy things to do in New York City this 4th of July.

The 46th Annual Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks

This year’s 4th of July fireworks display in New York City will be a sensorial spectacular that features patriotic music performed by The United States Army Field Band and Soldiers’ Chorus as well as the Young People’s Chorus of New York City, with the fireworks orchestration by Ray Chew of American Idol and Dancing With the Stars. Expect innovative fireworks, including whistling jellyfish, little snakes, blinking smiling faces, swimming chrysanthemums and other awe-inspiring shapes exploding against the night sky. Macy’s recommends elevated viewing sites along both banks of the East River, where the fireworks will launch from five barges moored in the Midtown Manhattan area. The Jewel, Club Quarters Times Square and Club Quarters Grand Central are closest to the exhibit (even walkable if you’re up for a half-hour jaunt), but the CQ Hotel at the World Trade Center is only a fifteen-minute car ride or a half-hour train ride to viewing points along the western bank. The show starts at 9:25 p.m. and continues for 25 minutes.

See the Fireworks From a NYC Rooftop

If you’d rather avoid the crowds, New York City offers some of the best rooftops for 4th of July fireworks viewing. Call ahead to make reservations for these popular rooftop venues. Of course, several of our NYC hotels boast rooftop lounges for post-fireworks cocktails and late-night star gazing. Book a stay at The Jewel, Club Quarters WTC or Club Quarters Grand Central to enjoy NYC skylines during your visit.

Fourth of July NYC Fireworks Cruise Aboard the Liberty Belle

Enjoy a front-row seat to the July 4th New York City fireworks display on this four-hour cruise that features a live DJ, an open bar, dinner and dancing. The 21-and-up venue is closest to our CQ Hotel at the World Trade Center (about a 15-minute cab or car ride), but it’s easily accessible from our Midtown Manhattan hotels via multiple transportation options. The Liberty Belle departs from Pier 36 at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $290 per person, with VIP seating available for two at $2,000. Several other July 4th cruises are available in NYC.

The Travis Parade on Staten Island

For a small-town Independence Day celebration, The Travis Parade on Staten Island is just the ticket. The parade starts at 12:30 p.m. and includes marching bands and floats. The triangular route ends where it begins, at the Showplace Center on 141 East Service Road. Staten Island is about 45 minutes away by cab or car from our hotel near Times Square. Note that all access roads to Travis will close at 11:30 a.m., so plan to arrive early if you go.

Chicago River Fireworks

July 4th in Chicago

Celebrate July 4th in Chicago with a stay at one of our downtown Chicago hotels and enjoy all the Windy City has to offer on this holiday weekend.

On July 4th the Navy Pier show begins at 9:30 p.m. and promises to be nothing short of spectacular. Viewing is free, and because the fireworks explode at a fairly high altitude, they’re visible from many points throughout the city. If you wish to observe them up close at the pier, you’re only a 9-minute cab or car ride from our Central Loop hotel. You can catch other 4th of July fireworks at multiple Chicago area venues.

Chicago Cubs Baseball at Wrigley Field

Baseball tops the list of America’s favorite pastimes, so what better time to take in a game than on 4th of July weekend in Chicago? Catch the Cubs at Wrigley Field on Friday, Saturday or Sunday (July 1st through the 3rd) playing against the Boston Red Sox. Tickets for this family-friendly event start at $42 and may be purchased online. Wrigley Field is 15 minutes by car and 20 minutes by train from our Wacker at Michigan CQ Hotel, and roughly 20 minutes by car or train from our Central Loop hotel.

Chicago 4th of July Parade

Enjoy a traditional July 4th celebration at Chicago’s 4th on 53rd Parade & Picnic. This family event is free for all ages and queues up at 10:30 a.m. in the Hyde Park Bank parking lot. At noon it proceeds south on Lake Park, east on 55th Street, north on Hyde Park Boulevard and west on 53rd before reaching its conclusion at Nichols Park. Enjoy the parade, then linger for more picnicking and fun. The parade is a short car or train ride from either of our Chicago hotels.
